A post-construction cleaning checklist for the turnover crew
Construction cleanup is hard to finish while another trade is still cutting material in the next room. Use this sheet to agree which areas are released to the cleaning crew and what level of cleaning is included. Separate rough debris work, detailed finish cleaning and a return touch-up rather than promising a single pass will cover every condition.

A post-construction cleaning checklist for the turnover crew
Release areas before mobilizing
- Ask the site contact to identify rooms ready for cleaning and trades still working nearby.
- Record whether construction waste removal is included or handled by the builder.
- Confirm access, lighting, water and safe separation from active work.
- Identify unknown residues or suspect materials that need assessment outside the cleaning scope.
Protect the finished surfaces
- Obtain finish-care instructions for flooring, stone, cabinets and coated glass.
- Test an agreed inconspicuous area before using a product on an unfamiliar finish.
- Record preexisting chips, scratches and residue with permission before cleaning.
- Leave protective films or coverings in place unless their removal is expressly assigned.
Detailed dust removal
- Work through the agreed accessible ledges, trim, cabinet exteriors and shelves.
- Use dust-control methods appropriate to the site and the crew training.
- Avoid spreading collected dust into occupied or completed areas.
- Record inaccessible high surfaces and specialist equipment needs as exceptions.
Glass, fixtures and floors
- Clean agreed glass without assuming paint or adhesive can be scraped safely.
- Wipe installed fixtures and surfaces according to their care instructions.
- Remove loose debris before the agreed final floor-cleaning method.
- List residue that cannot be removed within the approved method and scope.
Turnover and return work
- Walk released areas with the builder contact and identify remaining defects separately from cleaning tasks.
- Mark any room recontaminated by later trade work instead of recording it as untouched.
- Agree who handles punch-list repairs and whether another clean is authorized.
- Close out keys, site access and the crew task record through your handoff process.

This task list is not a hazardous-material assessment or a site safety plan.
How to use the template.
- Start with the builder release schedule. Name the areas and cleaning stage on the DOCX before assigning the crew.
- Remove any task your crew is not trained or equipped to perform, particularly unknown construction residues or inaccessible surfaces.
- Use separate copies for distinct stages so a rough-clean mark is not mistaken for a finished handover.
- Record later trade activity and review any proposed return charge against the agreed scope before billing.
Useful answers.
Does this include hauling all construction debris?
Only if your agreement includes it and your crew can handle the material appropriately. Identify the waste stream, container arrangements and handling responsibilities before mobilization.
Should cleaners remove paint from new glass?
Do not make that a routine promise. Confirm the glazing and coating instructions and the approved method; unsuitable tools can damage the surface.
How do I document a room that gets dusty again?
Record the completed stage and the later activity observed, with photographs if permitted. Ask the site contact to authorize the next task rather than erasing the original completion record.
Keep exploring.
