Base a welding quote on the drawing and site conditions
The drawing revision and material specification matter as much as the length of a weld. A welding quote should show fabrication, preparation, fitting and finishing responsibilities, with site access assessed separately from shop work. This sample uses a small nonstructural steel fabrication. It leaves engineering, inspection standards and suitability for service to the actual project requirements and qualified professionals rather than claiming the sample is a fabrication specification.

| Description | Quantity / unit | Rate | Amount |
|---|---|---|---|
| Supply steel sections matching agreed nonstructural drawing | 1 material lot | $210.00 | $210.00 |
| Cut, prepare and weld assembly to approved scope | 6 shop hours | $72.00 | $432.00 |
| Fit completed assembly at surveyed accessible location | 1 site fitting visit | $190.00 | $190.00 |
Total (USD): $832.00
Example: the steel assembly and USD amounts are fictional; they are not welding rates or an engineering specification.
[Identify drawing revision, dimensions, material grade and quantities.]
[Describe finish preparation, coating and dimensional checks included.]
[Separate shop fabrication from site fitting, lifting and access requirements.]
[Resolve design responsibility, applicable inspection and qualified procedure requirements before accepting work.]
How to use the template.
- Review the drawing and intended use, and identify questions that need the designer or another qualified professional.
- Inspect supplied material and site conditions before deciding what can be fabricated or fitted within your scope.
- Separate materials, shop preparation, assembly and site work. Include consumables in the basis you actually use.
- Define the finish and checking responsibilities, keeping specialist testing or certification distinguishable from routine fabrication.
- Confirm the drawing revision and assess changes before cutting material. Keep the quoted version with the job records.
Useful answers.
Can the sample be used for structural welding?
It is a general nonstructural estimate example. Structural work needs project-specific design, qualifications and applicable procedures assessed by the appropriate professionals.
Should site welding use the same assumptions as shop work?
No automatic assumption is appropriate. Access, power, protection, positioning and site coordination can change the work, so assess the location and describe it separately.
What if the drawing changes after quoting?
Review the changed dimensions, material and fabrication sequence. Update the scope and estimate before work proceeds on a different revision.
Keep exploring.
