Put your own name and work on a usable bill
Working for yourself does not mean the client knows which name to pay or what a project total includes. Make the connection between your legal identity, any trading name and the work you delivered. This sample uses independent research and document preparation to illustrate a sole operator's bill without assuming an employer relationship or a particular business structure.

How to use the template.
- Confirm the name the client has in its vendor records and the name associated with your payment instructions. Resolve a mismatch before submitting the invoice.
- Choose hours, a deliverable or another agreed unit. Describe what you supplied rather than using only a job title such as consultant.
- Include the client purchase-order reference if one was issued. Distinguish reimbursable expenses from work covered by the accepted fee.
- Replace the example figures, record payments already received and check every total after editing. Keep the issued invoice with the agreement and delivery record.
Useful answers.
Can I invoice under a trading name?
Use the business identity appropriate to your situation and the client's vendor record. Check registration, disclosure and tax questions with the relevant authority or a qualified professional.
What if the client asks for a timesheet?
Provide the agreed supporting record through your own communication method. The invoice can summarize the period and work while the timesheet supplies the approved detail.
Is an invoice proof of self-employed status?
No. A billing document does not determine employment classification, business registration or tax treatment. Get qualified advice where the working arrangement raises those questions.
Keep exploring.
