Make excavation quantities and site assumptions visible

A digging total is difficult to assess when it hides mobilization, excavated volume and the spoil destination. Build the estimate from the surveyed scope and identify which quantities remain provisional. This sample separates those parts so a client can see the work you priced and the conditions that could require a revision.

Example: quantities, load counts and prices are fictional. They do not predict excavation costs, soil conditions or truck capacity.

[Attach dimensions and explain whether volume is measured in place or by another agreed basis.]

[Identify access assumptions, spoil destination and exclusions for rock, water or unsuitable material.]

[State who supplies survey, engineering, utility information and testing arrangements.]

[Replace the figures and add applicable tax, quote validity and the method for approving changed quantities.]

How to use the template.

  1. Base the scope on project information reviewed by qualified people, naming the drawing revision and physical work limits.
  2. Separate moving equipment, excavation, hauling, imported material and restoration so omissions are visible.
  3. Explain the quantity basis and any provisional load assumptions. A cubic-yard line should not silently stand for an unknown number of truck trips.
  4. Calculate your own equipment, labor, haulage and accepted disposal costs. Describe how unexpected conditions are assessed before revising the estimate.
  5. Review the assumptions with the client and share the proposed scope with the downloaded estimate through your own method.

Useful answers.

Should I quote excavation by hours or volume?

Choose the basis you can support for the surveyed project and explain it clearly. Measured volume, equipment time and a fixed defined scope have different assumptions; do not switch between them without agreement.

How can I show uncertain spoil quantities?

Label the quantity basis and what remains provisional, including the receiving location and haulage assumptions. Agree how actual quantities and changed conditions will be reviewed instead of presenting an unsupported exact total.

Does the sample include engineering or utility locating?

No. Identify those responsibilities explicitly and obtain the appropriate qualified services. The estimate is a commercial document and does not supply design, clear a site or define a safe excavation method.
