An automotive detailing checklist from intake to final light check

A detailing checklist should follow the vehicle rather than promise every treatment on every finish. Start with the intake condition, inspect sensitive trim and separate the selected package from possible add-ons. The final check is easier when the detailer knows what was agreed for the wheels, paint, glass, seats and cargo area.

Vehicle detailing inspection and task card

Intake with the owner

  • Record vehicle reference and the agreed service package.
  • Inspect paint, wheels, glass and interior for existing damage with permission.
  • Ask the owner to remove valuables and identify aftermarket films, coatings or delicate repairs.
  • Agree handling of child seats, personal items and areas excluded from cleaning.

Exterior cleaning sequence

  • Inspect wheel finishes and choose suitable wheel and tire products.
  • Pre-rinse and wash accessible exterior surfaces using an appropriate method.
  • Clean door jambs and fuel-door recess only where included and safe.
  • Dry paint and exterior trim without introducing avoidable abrasion.
  • Treat decontamination, polishing and protection as separate agreed tasks rather than automatic inclusions.

Cabin and cargo area

  • Remove loose debris and vacuum accessible seat, carpet and cargo surfaces.
  • Use material-appropriate methods on fabric, leather, plastics and touchscreens.
  • Clean reachable vents, seams and controls without forcing liquid into components.
  • Clean interior glass and mirrors with a method suitable for any film.
  • Leave child-seat removal or refitting to the agreed responsible person.

Finish under useful lighting

  • Inspect glass for streaks, seams for residue and mats for secure placement.
  • Check tires and controls for slippery product residue.
  • Explain stains, scratches or odors that remain rather than promising correction.
  • Review completed work, return keys and record vehicle handover.

[Vehicle reference; package; detailer; condition notes; authorized add-ons]

Do not use this sheet as paint-correction training or as an instruction to dismantle vehicle components.

Record inaccessible areas and declined treatments instead of marking them completed.

How to use the template.

  1. Choose the tasks that match the booked package and inspect the vehicle before starting.
  2. Mark pre-existing damage, sensitive materials and items the owner will handle.
  3. Adapt products and methods to the vehicle finish and your training, keeping optional correction work separate.
  4. Use the final section for a handover discussion and retain the condition record through your own process.

Useful answers.

Does a full detail automatically include paint correction?

No. Define polishing, scratch treatment and protective products separately. A checklist should reflect the service sold and the vehicle assessment rather than imply every defect will disappear.

Should I remove installed child seats?

Resolve that with the owner before work. Record the responsible person and follow your own suitable procedure; the sample does not provide child-seat removal or installation instructions.

Can the sheet be used for a mobile visit?

Yes. Add the agreed location, access and utility arrangements. Record any weather or site condition that prevents safe completion of a selected task.
