Consulting invoices that reconcile to the engagement
The engagement letter explains what you agreed to do; the invoice explains what is now payable. Reference a completed milestone, a clearly bounded advisory period or approved time entries so the sponsor can verify the charge. Keep internal notes and confidential findings out of a document that may pass through a wider accounts team.

How to use the template.
- Confirm the legal billing entity and purchase order against the engagement rather than relying only on the sponsor name.
- Use a milestone description for fixed-fee work and attach an appropriate time summary for authorized hourly work.
- Reconcile advance payments, expense approvals and any agreed credits before calculating the amount due.
- Review the description for confidential material, replace the fictional charges and share the checked invoice.
Useful answers.
Should I attach my full working analysis to the invoice?
Usually the invoice needs a concise deliverable reference, not the confidential analysis itself. Use the agreed reporting and information-sharing process for the actual work product.
How do I show a retainer already paid?
Distinguish the services billed from the advance payment applied to them. Reconcile the engagement terms and payment record so the customer can follow the remaining amount due.
Can fixed-fee and hourly work appear together?
They can when separately authorized. Label each billing basis and reference the scope approval so hourly follow-up is not mistaken for work already covered by the milestone fee.
Keep exploring.
