Put the carpentry dimensions into the estimate

Built-ins and trim need more detail than a line labeled carpentry. Record the measured opening, material specification, exposed edges and finish responsibility so the client can tell what will be made and fitted. This estimate uses a shelving project to show the difference between workshop fabrication, site installation and an allowance for final finishing.

[Attach dimensions, drawings, material grade, hardware and finish responsibility.]

[List assumptions about walls, access, floor protection and services in fixing areas.]

[Define exclusions for electrical changes, concealed repairs and other specialist work.]

[Record applicable tax, lead-time assumptions and approval before fabrication.]

How to use the template.

  1. Survey the installation area and mark dimensions that need confirmation before cutting materials.
  2. Attach a drawing or specification that identifies shelf arrangement, edging, hardware and finish. Reference its revision on the estimate.
  3. Separate purchased materials, workshop time and site fitting so allowances and client selections are visible.
  4. Review access, substrate assumptions and the change process before ordering. Replace every illustrative amount with your own estimate.

Useful answers.

Should I quote before final measurements?

Identify preliminary dimensions and make final measurement a clear step before fabrication. An estimate based on an unverified opening should not read as a confirmed cutting list.

How do I handle a client who has not chosen a finish?

Use a defined allowance or exclude final finishing explicitly, with a procedure for confirming the selection. Explain who prepares, coats and touches up the installed work.

Can the same layout cover doors or trim?

Yes, after replacing the shelving example. Describe door sizes, hardware, trim profiles, lengths and installation conditions that matter to the actual job rather than retaining irrelevant fabrication lines.
